History of the Miss America Program
Source: From the Miss America website www.missamerica.org
The Miss America competition has a 98-year history of looking ahead! MAO was the first competition to offer a talent category and soon after scholarship awards for young women to be able to go to college and further their education.
Miss America has evolved in society as women in society have evolved.
In the year 2018, candidates were no longer judged on outward appearance. That meant the elimination of the swimsuit competition and a choice for each candidate in the Evening Wear category to showcase wardrobe that expressed their own individual style.
But most importantly, the candidates’ voices were heard more often and more clearly! Throughout the competition, candidates have more opportunities to advocate for their social impact initiatives and to demonstrate how they are uniquely qualified for the exciting job of being a title holder under the Miss America Competition.
The Miss America Organization stands for empowering young women across the country to be the best they can be through leadership, talent, communication skills and smarts.
Miss America 2.0 Vision
There she is.
Miss Neurosurgeon, Miss Social Activist, Miss Jet Pilot, Miss Investigative Journalist, Miss Expert Coder, Miss CEO… Miss Whatever-She-Was Created To-Be.
And Yes, she is beautiful.
Beautiful in the way she is smart, principled and passionate. Stunning in how she leads, commands a room and makes an impact. Striking in her genuineness, fearlessness and ability to take her influence and use it to impact the world.
Never guided in what society deems she ‘should do’ but forever driven by what she ‘can do’. She has the confidence and skills, and is empowered to make it happen.
There she is. Miss America.
No wonder she has a crown. She rules.
